Leaning In: Why I’m revamping how I do business

I’m revamping how I do business.

Because I lost sight of the reason it all started.

Here’s some backstory.

Me sitting in my office at my “day job” back in 2018.

I spent years building up my business and my clientele. I did it on the side while also working a full-time job, so I was really able to focus on building it right.

The whole reason I started this was to help show people the beauty that already existed in their lives. To document their lives in a way that showed human connection and the raw emotions that come with it.

Then it blossomed into something bigger.

I began creating images for entrepreneurs as they chased their dreams. Helping them tell their stories and strip away expectations, so they could embrace what made their businesses unique and beautiful and worthy of people spending their hard-earned money on.

I was creating beautiful images full of personality and beauty and love. I was helping people share their passions, helping parents document their babies’ fleeting childhoods, helping women feel seen for who they truly are.

The first Grand Opening Celebration I ever Photographed:

So in 2022 I quit my job and dove head first into this work.

And suddenly it became about the money.

I was chasing the next client, the next sale, the next contract.

I was still putting my all into my clients and their projects, but I was also falling into the hustle culture mentality of working myself into overwhelm and constantly running in circles. I thought I was doing everything right, but I was starting to feel frustrated and annoyed and, frankly, sad. I wasn’t allowing myself to celebrate every new project, I would see a transaction come through and keep hustling for the next.

Which is precisely when leads started to dry up. I started getting more rejections and less projects. I spiraled, considered getting a job, cried, felt like a failure.

Then my business coach swooped in with her wisdom and experience and helped me shift my perspective. She helped me start to celebrate every win, whether it was $1 earned or a repeat contract signed. She helped me dig deep into my marketing and my why, and reminded me of why I started this business in the first place.

My mindset shifts are happening slowly, but they’re happening.

And my business is going to benefit because of it.

My work is going to go back to focusing on the heart of why I started. To create gorgeous images and help people feel like the best, most authentic version of themselves. Because when I get back to the heart of why I started, and focus on making every single client experience as beautiful as I can, I know the rest will follow.
