Mother’s Day Self-Care & Gift Ideas

Mother’s Day is this weekend, as you know if you’re a mom and hopefully know if you have a mom. 😉

Today I’m going to split this into 2 parts.

Part 1: self care for women that moms should definitely read

Part 2: Last minute gift ideas for your mom

Let’s dive in.

Part 1: Self-Care for women (mom, read this)

Set some boundaries

Think about areas in your life where you’re feeling taken advantage of, disrespected, or unappreciated…

Now consider how you can set some firm boundaries in those areas to make your life a little easier and help you feel more in control.

Finding yourself answering work calls late into the night, because your boss expects you to? Set a firm boundary around your work hours and stick to them. Let your boss know that you will not be answering work calls past a specific time, and then actually do it.

Having to clean your entire house even though you have a partner and kids? Sit your family down and explain that they need to start contributing. Assign tasks to each person, or set a timeframe where everyone will clean together for 30 minutes. Then do it. Don’t just take the tasks back over because they forget. Hold them accountable however you need to, with charts or chore apps or calendar reminders, and don’t feel like you’re nagging when it comes to equal distribution of labor in your home.

Wherever the boundaries need to be set, find ways to set them and stay firm in them. You’ll find it gets easier with time, and it will ease a lot of frustration, anxiety, and unhappiness in your life.

Take time for yourself

Remember to take time doing the things that bring you joy. Every day.

I know, this sounds like a lot.

Woman holding a bundle of fresh flowers in each hand, laughing as the wind blows through her hair.

If you need to ease into it start with just 15 minuets a day. In 15 minutes a day you could:

  • Take up a new hobby

  • Read a chapter in a book

  • Start a meditation practice

  • Go outside and dance

  • Do a short workout video

Other than your daily practices, try to take a few hours once a week, or even once a month, to go out and do something you love. Go shopping on your own, take yourself out to lunch, go for a hike, spend time with you. Being alone with yourself is so important to your well-being, and you deserve to step away from the role of mom, employee, spouse, etc. and just be you.

Spend quality time with loved ones

While spending time with yourself is important, so is creating a loving atmosphere with quality bonding with your family. As a family, pick 1 thing that you’re going to do together and start making a regular practice of it. Even if you have really busy schedules and you get 1 evening a week, or an hour a day, or a weekend morning, together you can find the right time and activity you’re going to do. Here are some ideas to get you started:

Mom and children sitting on a blanket in a park, reading a book together and laughing.
  • Dinner together every weeknight

  • Games day every Sunday afternoon

  • Saturday Brunch

  • Weekend gardening

  • Family reading time

  • Evening walk around the neighborhood

Let go of guilt

I don’t know a lot of moms who have mastered this.

In fact, I don’t know any moms who have.

Give yourself permission NOT to feel guilty. Get everyone on board with your new self-care and wellness rituals, and stay accountable to yourself. You deserve to feel good, and that won’t take away from the space you’re still going to make for your loved ones. In fact, occasionally putting your own needs first is a great way to teach your tiny humans that they deserve self-care and wellness in their own lives, and to keep you functioning at your best so you can better support them.

It’s really a win/win/win.

Part 2: Last Minute Gift Ideas for Mom

If you haven’t had the chance to get the mom in your life a gift, here are just a few ideas you can get last minute:

Spa treatments (or a full spa day if you have the funds):

You can purchase a gift certificates at local spas and wellness studios for:

  • Manicures/Pedicures

  • Massage

  • Facials

  • Lash artistry

  • Beauty treatments

Gift baskets

If you want to get your mom something great but don’t have the funds for anything huge, you can put some small beautiful gifts together to make a cute basket. Here are some ideas you can put together:

  • At-Home Spa Day: Natural Candles, a bottle of wine or a loose leaf calming tea, and bath salts for a relaxing tub soak.

  • Journaling kit: A beautiful journal or sketch book with a set of colored pencils and a fancy writing pen with drafting pencils.

  • Woo-Woo basket: A new tarot deck, a few crystals, and a smoke cleansing bundle or incense.

  • Book Lover Basket: A couple of new books by your mom’s favorite author, a magnetic bookmark, and a clip on reading light.

  • Gardening Kit: New garden gloves, a gift card to her favorite nursery, and some nice herb markers or garden décor.

  • The Charcuterie Gift: A brand new charcuterie board with a set of matching sauce cups and cheese knives, and some fun jellies or dips.

If none of these make sense for the mom you’re buying for, think about things she likes or specific hobbies she’s mentioned wanting to try. Then look up items that fit those themes and find those at your local shops. Chances are you will be able to find a lot of options at local stores, you just have to google what you’re looking for and follow it by your town.

For example, I would type in “Gardening stores in Kennewick WA” or “craft stores in the Tri-Cities, WA”.

As a 2-in-1 gift:

You can purchase a ticket for the women’s self-love retreat happening on September 14, 2024 right now with a $50 discount! This gives your mom a chance to focus on her, learn some great self-care practices, and also connect with other women, and is a phenomenal gift for a woman who needs a day like this but wouldn’t spend the money on herself.

I hope these ideas inspired you!

And I hope you remember to take care of you.
